June 14th - Alice Springs.

We arrived in Alice Springs on the 12th June after 5 very long driving days from Brisbane. We had a good trip with road conditions mostly ok despite all the rain earlier this year. We have spent the time doing chores, making a few repairs to the camper door lock in particular, and visiting friends. Today we finally made it to the Todd Mall and to the John Flynn Church where we were married.

Our travelling companions, Tim and Dorothy, arrived in town from Adelaide today so we will catch up with them tomorrow.
We plan to leave on Monday 17th  and travel due west from Papunya till we reach well 33 on the Canning Stock Route (CSR) then turn south and travel past 10 wells on the CSR , then turn west on the Talawana track till we reach the road into Rudall River NP. We then travel  northward through this NP coming out onto the Telfer Mine Road where we turn west again and go through to Marble Bar. After a couple of nights there we will travel south to Karijini NP. Tim and Dorothy then have to head back home to Adelaide and we will head towards the coast. This is all that we have planned at the moment.

The weather here in the Alice was quite warm when we arrived on Wednesday but it is cooling down fast giving us a taste of what is to come out in the desert.

June 28th - Marble Bar to Hamersley Gorge 2.

We drove on and eventually reached the Great Northern Highway where we came across lots of traffic for the first time since leaving Alice Springs. There were lots of cars and caravans and also ore trucks. These trucks can have 4 to 5 side tipping trailers on behind. There were quite a few dead cattle on the side of the road. Obviously they don’t stand a chance with an ore truck. We drove through Wittenoon, the site of blue asbestos mining but now almost abandoned, without stopping and eventually arrived in the Hamersley Ranges. The redness of the peaks and cliffs is quite beautiful. We had to drive through a narrow Gorge to get to the Hamersley Gorge turnoff. Luckily we didn’t meet an ore truck. The Hamersley Gorge turned out to be well worth visiting with it’s unique rock formations and majestic cliffs. Rock formations on the side of the Gorge. June 25th - 27th - Marble Bar.

We managed to drive out from Running Waters without any problems and headed along the Skull Spring Road towards Marble Bar. Driving out. Red hills along the Skull Springs Road. A rocky hill beside the road. The road had just been graded. They must have known we were coming. On arrival we checked into the local caravan park and Bruce the caretaker was very friendly and helpful. We did the washing and other chores as well as food shopping. In the evening we went to the Iron Clad Hotel, the local watering hole, for a very large meal and a few drinks at premium prices.  Next day we went 40klms  south of Marble Bar to a see a secret World War 2 Airfield that the Japanese never found. Planes flew as far as Borneo from this airfield. We were able to see lots of relics and evidence of buildings, gun pits, shooting range etc Aircraft Bay Runway Hospital Gun pit beside the runway. June 19 - Jupiter Well to Kunawarritji and Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route.

Driving westward today we saw a great variety of country and also a great variation in road surfaces.   We arrived at the Gary Junction where the Gary Junction Road and the Gary Highway meet. The Gary Highway goes south and meets up with the Gun Barrel Highway. We have visited both ends of this road now but have never driven on it. There is a book in a steel case for travellers to sign. We all signed the book. The Gary Highway!!!!! This was the plaque near the book. After leaving the Gary Junction it was only a short run, 65klms, into Kunawarritji 4 Klms after we crossed the CSR. We topped up with fuel and if we thought Kiwirrkurra fuel was expensive  take a look at the next photo. We decided to camp at Well 33 which is the closest well to Kunawarritji. The tank was overflowing as it was when we were here 10 years ago. So we did the washing and then relaxed. The flies were full on.
